Mixing yellow and purple FAQ

Mixed as paint, yellow and purple make a brown (#B9893B). As light on a screen, they make a tan (#FFCC9B), and blended in CSS with OKLCH they give a red (#EB5B66).

Light adds up instead of absorbing, so yellow and purple light make a tan (#FFCC9B). That is why screens can show bright yellows from red and green light, while the same paints would turn brown.

Change the ratio. Three parts yellow to one part purple gives a yellow (#D3A82F), while one part yellow to three parts purple gives a brown (#9A6A45). To lighten the result add white, and to darken it add a little black.

Use color-mix(in oklch, #FCD200 50%, #6B2FA3 50%), which gives #EB5B66. OKLCH keeps the middle of the mix bright, while mixing in sRGB tends to turn it gray.
